WVPRO provides a central contact and source for communicating and working with relevant government agencies. WVPRO maintains a strong working relationship with the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, The National Park Service, and the Army Corps of Engineers.
West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (DNR) – The Whitewater Commission
The Whitewater Commission governs the West Virginia Commercial Whitewater Industry. The commission consists of a cross section of industry stakeholders and private resource users. The Director of the DNR directs the commission. For more information, visit www.wvdnr.gov
National Park Service (NPS) - The majority of river activities take place within the boundaries of the New River Gorge National River, the Gauley River National Recreation Area, and to the north the Shenandoah River through Harpers Ferry National Historic Park., operated and regulated by the NPS. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) - The USACE manages two important flood mitigation systems on the New and Gauley Rivers. The Summersville Lake Dam, completed in 1966, serves as the headwaters for the Gauley River during the annual fall draw down. of lake waters. The Bluestone Dam completed in 1952, spans the New River at Hinton, WV. Both dams play an important role in facilitating the recreational uses of both rivers for private and commercial purposes.
